The Picos rise straight out of the Cantabrian coast — you can swim in the sea in the morning and stand at 2,000 m by afternoon. The mountains are steep and dramatic, but the paths are old shepherds' routes, well-made and gentle.
We stay at a restored stone farmhouse near Cangas de Onís, with a hot tub under the walnut tree and a kitchen that serves fabada and cider the proper way.
