Agafay isn't the sand sea of postcards. It's a hammada — a rolling plain of pale stone and dust, cut by dry riverbeds and backed on clear days by the snow of the High Atlas. That's exactly why we chose it: the walking is easy underfoot, the horizon is enormous and the silence is total.

Our camp is run by the Aït Ali family, who have hosted travellers here for three generations. Ten canvas tents sit around a central fire, with a long dining tent, a hammam built from rammed earth and a shaded platform for practice. Water comes from the family's own well; electricity from the sun.
