Vágar is the island with the airport, the Gásadalur waterfall and the lake that seems to hang above the sea. It's small enough to cross in half an hour and wild enough that you'll see more sheep than people.

We stay in a row of restored fishing houses in Bøur, with a wood-fired sauna on the shore and a ladder straight into the fjord. Expect wind, sun and rain on the same afternoon, and the best fish soup of your life.
