Overview

Cold water sounds like an endurance test. Done slowly and with good guidance, it's the opposite: the calmest, clearest feeling most guests have ever had. Dario teaches the breath and the entry, the sauna does the rest.

Between swims we walk the island's cliffs and valleys — Gásadalur, the Trælanípa lake walk, the old postman's path — and come home to fish soup, rye bread and a house that smells of wool and woodsmoke.

Is it for you?

You'll love it if…

  • You're curious about cold water but have never tried it properly

  • You love wild, empty places and changeable weather

  • You'd like moderate walking with plenty of rest

Probably not if…

  • You have a heart condition or uncontrolled blood pressure — please check with your doctor

  • You need guaranteed sunshine

  • You'd rather not swim at all

I came for the trekking and left with a sauna habit and four friends I still message every week. Nothing ever felt rushed.

Two days into the silence I stopped reaching for my phone. By day four I could hear the camels before I saw them.
